Can I Change My Mind After Accepting a Job Offer?. If you said yes to a job offer, can you change your mind and back out of it? How to get out of your employment agreement.
Can I change my mind after accepting a job offer?
Of course. A job isn't a life sentence, even if it feels like it.
I accepted the job. Now I don't want to do that, I want to do something else.
Just as you can quit a job, you can refuse one after you accepted it.
What about the signing bonus?
If you aren't going to work for them, you have to give them the money back.
Dang. I wish it were like a broken engagement.
In a way it is, because you broke it off.
Do I have to tell them why I broke it off?
You should tell them that you are breaking up -- refusing the offer -- as soon as you can so they can fill the position. You don't have to tell them why.
Would telling them that I found something else help me in negotiations?
You should have negotiated for the salary before accepting the position. After accepting it, you're stuck with the salary.
Dang. I was hoping to say that if I received another offer, they'd up it.
You should have said during the negotiation that you had a pending offer. Though you can negotiate with the new place saying that you have another offer, if you haven't accepted the other offer yet.
What if I can't bring myself to refuse?
If you accept a job and don't show up, you're certainly out of a job.
What does that count as?
It counts as a no show. I guess you could start and quit if you don't like the job.
What happens if they pull the job offer?
If you got a starting bonus, you get to keep it. If it is because of bad credit or references, you get nothing.
What if they decide they don't like me?
If they lay you off on the first day, unemployment, and if you are fired, just the pay for the day. But don't take the job unless you like it -- or need to feed your family.
Don't worry. I need to be on a diet anyway.
